Use case

Price a government bid
from the buyer's own award history.

Before you write a number, see how many bidders the buyer draws, how far winners land below the median and where your cost sits. Then decide to bid or walk away, against your own margin floor.

The method

Five steps from a buyer to a price

Open the buyer you are bidding to and read its award history before you write a number.

  1. Open the buyerBenchmarks, scoped to one buyer
  2. Read densityBidders per tender
  3. Read the spreadWinner versus median
  4. Read the percentilesWhere your price would sit
  5. DecideBid, or no bid

Density

How many bidders this buyer draws. Three bidders and twelve are different markets.

Spread

How far winners land below the median priced bid, at the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles.

Percentiles

Award values from the 10th to the 90th percentile on one ruler. Place your cost on it.

Step 4

Place your cost on the buyer's ruler

In this example the buyer's median award is 2.78M and winners priced about 10% below it, so the winning zone sits under the median. A cost of 2.1M leaves room; a bid of 2.45M lands inside the zone.

Step 5

Decide against your floor

The bid less your cost is your margin: 0.35M on 2.45M is 14.3%. Above a 12% floor, bid. At an 18% floor the same bid sits below the line, and you walk away with the numbers in hand.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the award history come from?

From the published bid tables behind the buyer's awarded tenders: the bidders, their prices and the award. Scope the benchmarks to the buyer you are bidding to and every panel recomputes for it; the charts on this page walk the same five steps on example data.

Can I compare the buyer with the market?

Yes. A compare toggle lays the whole market beside the buyer: histograms become shares and award values sit on one ruler, so a small buyer and the market line up. Every view is a link you can share with the pricing meeting.

What if my margin is below the floor?

Then the history is telling you the buyer's winning zone does not fit your cost, and you walk away before the proposal is written. That is the point of reading the numbers first: a no-bid decided early costs far less than a lost bid built over weeks.
